Fred Phillips
Founder and CEO
Fred Phillips is the founder of Atelier do Sul, one of Portugal’s most respected creative communication design consultancies. His first encounter with the world of design came at a very young age in the late 1950s, when he starred in a black-and-white Kellogg’s Corn Flakes television advertisement in the UK—an early experience that sparked his lifelong interest in visual storytelling and the broader field of communication design, including advertising.
Originally from England, Fred moved to the Algarve in 1973. Over the following decades, he built extensive hands-on experience in corporate identity, graphic design, signage, exhibition displays, and more recently, digital and web design. His approach combines creative vision with deep technical knowledge of production and execution, ensuring that every project is both visually compelling and strategically effective.
In 1979, Fred founded Atelier do Sul Design Consultants, which has become a trusted partner for businesses across the Algarve and beyond. The studio is known for its clean, contemporary design ethos and its commitment to supporting local brands with impactful communication strategies.
Fred has also played a key role in the relaunch of some of the Algarve’s most prestigious real estate developments, including Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, and Vilamoura, contributing his design expertise to elevate their brand presence and visual identity. He is also credited with coining the now widely recognised term “Algarve’s Golden Triangle”, which has become synonymous with the region’s luxury property market.
Fred continues to be a guiding force behind Atelier do Sul’s creative direction and strategic vision. His role is gradually shifting toward a consultancy basis, supporting his business partner and the wider team in delivering high-quality design solutions. His legacy and influence remain central to the studio’s philosophy, ensuring continuity and innovation across all projects.
